From Stiffler Navigator, www.amertiech.net/users/jacoons/sn_home.htm, My Lineage (James Anthony Coons):

The Stiffler family (John, Peter, and Jacob) lived in Wurttenberg, Germany. They came to the United States from Germany in 1742. Their father (Unknown Stiffler) and mother apparently did not accompany then on the trip. Perhaps they had already died. The Stiffler brothers settled in Bedford County, PA. Peter and Jacob both died in Bedford [County, PA]. It is not known where John died.

BEFORE THE REVOLUTIONARY WAR

In the region south of Altoona, PA and not far from where the Pennsylvania R.R. now rounds the Horseshoe Curve to mount the Alleghany divide, there were in the days previous to the Revolution Stifflers located along the streams and in the valleys. This region south to Bedford has been the residing place of the ancestors of many branches of the family at some time during that past 160 years, altho (sic) there were those who remained in Maryland and York County, Pennsylvania, and others who settled north of Altoona.

Peter Stiffler had land on Dunning Creek in 1788, and Jacob Stifler (sic) bought land near McKee Gap in 1783. These two brothers, reported to have come from Germany in 1742, had in accordance with their wills, 11 and 10 children, respectively, all of whom grew to have families, intermarrying with the Beegles, Wilts, Helsels, Wertz, Harle, Claar, Feather, Clapper, Corl, Hollar, Holderbaum, Shaw, Sell, Koon, Leighty, Yingling, Ticherhof, Brumbaugh, Hoover, Mauk, Deibert, McCormick, and many others - all early settlers in this region before 1800.

Here are located early homestead of the fathers, grandfathers, great grandfathers, of a thousand or more Stiffler and related descendants. To those of us farther removed, this region has a lure and a fascination as the testing grounds for the making of Stiffler pioneers. Here the wilderness was conquered, the Indians outwitted, and an early history says, "until the completion of the Sarah furnace property in 1832, the residents were denied the advantages of markets for the sale of surplus products, and male alike were clad in homespun, home-made garments. indeed, during those years, few young men and women could boast of having been inside a dry goods store."

For 25 years, annual reunions of the Stiffler Family of Central Pennsylvania have been held in this region. It has been suggested that a National Reunion be held in 1942, celebrating the 200th anniversary of the coming of the first Stifflers to America. Will this region from Altoona to Bedford see the return of hundreds of her children whose ancestry had, a century before, gone forth to help make the new Nation?

" . . . .My father assembled the family tree. Most of his research was conducted over the period of 1975-1990 when he was a member of the Philadelphia Historical Society and his source material was various of their reference materials. Several books worth citing are "The History of Mt. Union" by C. H. Welch and "The History of Huntingdon County" by Africa. Both of these books have information on the Shavers previously mentioned. (Peter and Nicholas). Another book is "The History of Hill Valley". My father had these books in his library which he donated to the Huntingdon County Historical Society last year just prior to his death. Also, the final report of the Administrators of the estate of Nicholas Jr. is available at the Huntingdon County Courthouse as are the wills of Peter Sr. and his brother John (Major John)."

Arrived 07 OCT 1755 in Philadelphia from Rotterdam on the Neptune. George SMITH, master. Stopped at Gosport, England before sailing to America with 226 passengers

When Johann Christian GAST found himself too old to work, he offered his entire farm to his eldest son, John ( on condition that he would support him and his wife ). John declined the farm, saying he had a good trade (shoemaker) and did not want a farm). He then made the offer to his next son (Christian?) who also declined. This second refusal brought the old man to tears which caused the son to relent and he accepted the farm. After this. John Nicholas bought of a Mr. MILES, 330 acres of land in Bush Valley in what is now Centre County, and wishing to get the family together, he prevailed upon his brother (Christian?) to sell the homestead and take part of his purchase in Brush Valley, which he did, and with his family and parents, moved into the valley where the old people died and are buried in Rebersburg.
